Award-Winning Chefs Open New Loro Asian Smokehouse In Houston

Houston food lovers, the wait is almost over! Loro’s highly anticipated second location, the Asian-inspired smokehouse, is set to open on Saturday, September 28. This new spot is located near Rice Village at 5333 Kirby Drive and promises to bring even more delicious offerings to the Houston area.

Loro, part of Hai Hospitality, was created by James Beard Award-winning chefs Aaron Franklin (of Franklin Barbecue) and Tyson Cole (of Uchi).

The first Loro opened in 2018, blending Franklin’s expertise in smoked meats with Cole’s creative use of Asian flavors. Since then, it has become a favorite for food enthusiasts.

Signature Menu Highlights

At this fast-casual restaurant, diners can enjoy signature dishes like sweet corn fritters, smoked prime bavette, and a cheeseburger topped with red onion-brisket jam. Other fan favorites include crispy chicken karaage with chili aioli and a variety of boozy slushes, including their signature frozen gin and tonic.

In addition to familiar items, the Kirby location will feature a few exclusive dishes, such as:

  • Pork Tostadas: Served with crème fraîche and shishito salsa verde on corn tortillas.
  • Smoked Shishito Queso: Accompanied by wonton chips and kimchi furikake (with pulled pork or brisket available for an extra charge).
  • Oak-Smoked Pulled Pork Sandwich: Topped with sesame slaw and smoked pepper BBQ sauce.
  • Double Smash Burger: Served with yuzu Thousand Island dressing, American cheese, and grilled onions.

For dessert, the Kirby location will be the first Loro to offer Dole Whip soft serve with yuzu marmalade and candied pineapple, adding a refreshing, tropical twist to their menu.

Happy hour, available Monday through Friday from 2-6 p.m., will feature additional discounts on both food and drinks.

Familiar Favorites With a Twist

Many of the dishes on the Kirby menu will be familiar to those who have visited Loro’s first Houston location in the Heights, which opened in 2022.

The menu includes meat plates, rice bowls, and salads with protein options like crispy Szechuan tofu, Malaysian curry chicken, char siew pork belly, and oak-smoked salmon. Popular salad choices include the Loro Wedge topped with brisket burnt ends and the Chilled Ginger Noodle Salad.

A New Space To Savor

The new Loro location, two years in the making, sits on the site of a former paint and body shop. The restaurant will accommodate 120 diners indoors and 70 on a dog-friendly, shaded patio. For those waiting, an outdoor area with a bar will help guests stay hydrated while they wait for their table.

“We felt such a warm welcome in Houston with our first location in the Heights that we knew we wanted to open another spot here,” Cole said. “We’ve added some fan-favorite dishes and exclusive options that guests will only find at Kirby.”

Loro will celebrate its opening day with $5 boozy slushies, and the first 100 diners will receive branded Yeti cups as a special treat.
