As Starbucks prepares for new leadership under former Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol, many workers are voicing concerns about the direction of the company. A longtime employee, with nearly 20 years of experience, shared their disappointment, stating that Starbucks has drastically changed from a great place to work into something unrecognizable.
“In the past, employees rarely left unless they pursued higher careers or retired,” the employee explained in an interview with Business Insider. When they started in the mid-2000s, the company was known for treating its staff well, but this reputation has faded due to staffing cuts and a surge in mobile orders. Previously, their store would have up to five employees per shift, but now there are only three, despite an increase in demand through the Starbucks app.

“It used to be a trendy, quirky coffee shop job, but now it feels like a soulless fast food empire,” the employee remarked. The shift in culture, they believe, began after former CEO Howard Schultz stepped down in 2017, leading to a decline in employee satisfaction.
Other Starbucks workers have shared similar frustrations on Reddit. One barista expressed a preference for working when the store is fully staffed, with another employee adding that handling seven cars in the drive-thru with only two workers is far from ideal. Some employees even criticized the shift from traditional espresso machines to automatic ones, which they feel devalues the skill of making coffee.
However, others argue that Starbucks has been on this path for a long time. One Reddit user claimed it was a “soulless fast food empire” over 20 years ago, while another questioned how someone could work at the chain for nearly two decades without noticing the change earlier.

A Starbucks spokesperson responded, stating that the company regularly collects feedback from employees through surveys and meetings. Employees are also encouraged to share their opinions and suggest improvements, though the spokesperson declined to comment on Niccol’s plans regarding compensation and working conditions.
