Angel’s Envy Unveils New Bourbon In Signature Series For The First Time In Over a Decade

Angel’s Envy has made a significant move in the bourbon world with the release of Angel’s Envy Triple Oak, the first new addition to its acclaimed Signature Series in more than 10 years. Led by master distiller Owen Martin, who joined the brand in 2022 after his tenure at Stranahan’s, this release continues Martin’s mission of blending innovation with tradition.

After releasing the brand’s first-ever Cask Strength Rye and a Port-finished Cask Strength Bourbon in 2023, Martin is taking Angel’s Envy in bold new directions, with Triple Oak showcasing the mastery of experimental finishes.

This new bourbon is matured in three distinct barrels Hungarian oak, French oak, and Kentucky’s own Chinkapin oak.

Why Chinkapin Oak?

Chinkapin oak, which grows throughout the U.S., from New England to Texas, plays a crucial role in the Triple Oak bourbon’s flavor profile. Martin explains, “We wanted to use oak from our backyard. Chinkapin is lesser-known but adds something unique.

It was about flexing our muscles as a blending team and seeing how we could combine different types of oak without over-oaking the bourbon.”The result is a carefully balanced bourbon that combines tradition with creativity.

The Barrel Maturation Process

The process for Triple Oak begins like all bourbon, with maturation in new American white oak casks. These barrels undergo a No. 3 char, toasted for 35 seconds to achieve a milder flavor than the deeper No. 4 char, which is commonly used.

The whiskey is then split between the Hungarian, Chinkapin, and French oak barrels, where it continues to age.

The French oak distillate, aged for at least three months and at 114 proof, comprises 20% of the final blend, adding a spicy finish. The Chinkapin oak (117.2 proof), which ages for at least six months, makes up 40%, providing a creamy, spice-forward flavor.

The remaining 40% comes from Hungarian oak (119.1 proof), which delivers a rich, oily viscosity and notes of baking spices.

The Art Of Blending

For Martin and his team, the key to crafting a standout bourbon like Triple Oak lies in the art of blending. “The broader idea of blending is to create balance,” says Martin.

“You have grains, distillate, primary maturation in new oak, the finishing barrel, and the proof all of these elements need to be adjusted until they fit together perfectly.”

By carefully balancing each distillate’s unique profile, Angel’s Envy has created a bourbon that is versatile, complex, and approachable.

A Bourbon For All Occasions

Angel’s Envy Triple Oak is designed to be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Its balanced structure makes it a pleasure to drink neat, but a few drops of water will open up new flavors. It’s also a great bourbon to use in cocktails, adding depth and complexity without overpowering the mix.

Unlike previous limited-edition releases from the Signature Series, Triple Oak will be widely available across all 50 states. “This is the largest new release I’ve ever done,” says Martin.

“It’s amazing to create a bottle that’s not only good and affordable but also accessible. Anyone can walk into their local liquor store and pick it up, whether they’re in Oakland or Austin.”
