McDonald’s has always been a dominant player in the fast-food industry, but 2024 has seen its share of challenges. The $5 Meal Deal: A Major Hit

One of the key factors behind McDonald’s resurgence is the $5 Meal Deal, launched in late June. The meal includes a 4-piece Chicken McNuggets (170 calories), fries (230 calories), a drink, and the choice between a McChicken (400 calories) or a McDouble (400 calories).

According to a July report by foot traffic platform Placer.ai, McDonald’s saw its busiest Tuesday of the year on the day the $5 Meal Deal became available. Even weeks after the launch, the deal continued to attract more customers.

The Placer.ai report revealed that visits to McDonald’s during the week of June 24 were up 2.5% compared to the chain’s weekly average between April 1 and August 5. This promotion has helped sustain elevated customer traffic since then.

Customer Response To The $5 Meal Deal

The $5 Meal Deal has been a huge success with customers. Data firm Numerator found that 70% of McDonald’s customers visited the chain partly because of the deal. In fact, 58% of customers chose McDonald’s over another restaurant due to this limited-time meal, and 91% said they would buy it again.

This deal not only provided value for customers but also helped McDonald’s stand out in a competitive market. It’s clear that affordability and attractive bundles can draw people back to fast-food chains.

The Collector’s Meal Promotion

McDonald’s Collector’s Meal, which launched on August 13, has also played a significant role in boosting the chain’s popularity. This promotion offers an entrée, side, drink, and a keepsake cup featuring designs inspired by past Happy Meal toys, merchandise, or McDonald’s collaborations.

The promotion quickly became a hit, with McDonald’s Senior Marketing Director Guillaume Huin sharing on social media that the cups were selling faster than expected. In a message to fans on X (formerly Twitter), Huin advised customers to head to their local restaurants quickly if they wanted to grab one of these collectible cups.

High Demand For Collector’s Cups

The demand for the Collector’s Cups has been so strong that they have appeared on eBay at significantly inflated prices. For instance, a complete set of six cups is currently selling for $125 on the resale platform.

The popularity of these cups highlights the power of nostalgia and exclusive items in attracting customer attention. McDonald’s ability to combine food with collectible items has proven to be an effective strategy for driving sales.

Looking Forward: Will Promotions Boost Sales?

While both the $5 Meal Deal and the Collector’s Meal have clearly boosted customer traffic, McDonald’s is still navigating broader challenges. The company recently reported its first decline in global same-store sales in over three years, largely due to reduced consumer spending in the quick-service restaurant sector.

Despite this, McDonald’s remains committed to focusing on value as a key strategy to entice customers. CEO Chris Kempczinski emphasized during a July earnings call that McDonald’s will continue to lead in offering value, stating, “For 70 years, McDonald’s has defined value in our industry, and we are taking meaningful actions across the world to assert our leadership.”

As McDonald’s pushes forward, the success of these promotions could play a crucial role in driving more sales and maintaining customer interest.
