Texas Mexican Chains Set to Take Over the U.S.

The Mexican food scene in the United States is about to experience a major boost, thanks to several Texas-based restaurant chains ready to make their mark nationwide.

According to a recent Mashed article, “Mexican Chain Restaurants You’re About to See Everywhere,” 12 Mexican and Tex-Mex chains are gearing up for expansion.

Out of these, an impressive seven hail from Texas, with five being taco-focused. Here’s a closer look at these Texan trailblazers set to conquer the U.S.

1. Chuy’s: A Tex-Mex Favorite

Founded in Austin in 1982, Chuy’s is renowned for its authentic Tex-Mex cuisine served in a fun and eclectic setting. With 101 locations across 15 states, including 10 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Chuy’s is primed for more growth.

The chain’s recent acquisition by Darden Restaurants, Inc. (the parent company of Olive Garden and LongHorn Steakhouse) in July 2024 is expected to fuel further expansion.

2. Fajita Pete’s: Fresh and Flavorful Fajitas

Established in Houston in 2008, Fajita Pete’s specializes in hand-made tortillas and a variety of fajitas, including chicken, pork, beef, and shrimp. Their commitment to from-scratch sides has helped them grow to 30 locations in Texas, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Colorado.

A new Austin location opened on September 1, with plans for more expansion through a robust franchising program.

3. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop: Baja-Style Bliss

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, launched in Fort Worth in 2001, offers Baja-style Mexican cuisine with a menu that includes tacos, burritos, and breakfast items.

With over 150 locations in 17 states, Fuzzy’s has been on a growth trajectory since its acquisition by Dine Brands (which also owns Applebee’s and IHOP) in 2022. More locations are expected as part of their expansion plans.

4. Taco Cabana: A Fast-Casual Classic

Taco Cabana, founded in San Antonio in the 1970s, is famous for its affordable tacos, burritos, and inventive frozen margaritas.

Acquired by Yadav Enterprises (which also owns Jack in the Box and Denny’s) in 2021, Taco Cabana is set to enhance its operations with upgraded drive-thrus and improved take-out processes. This move aims to streamline the dining experience and boost the chain’s growth.

5. Taco Palenque: Authentic Mexican Fare

Taco Palenque, founded in Laredo in 1987, is known for its authentic Mexican dishes, including tacos, enchiladas, and chicken mole.

While currently limited to Texas, the chain’s founder, Juan Francisco Ochoa Sr. (also the founder of El Pollo Loco), plans to expand Taco Palenque across the U.S. The chain’s rich, traditional menu is set to appeal to a broader audience.

6. Torchy’s Tacos: Creative and Expanding

Torchy’s Tacos began as a taco truck in Austin in 2006 and has since grown to 125 locations across 14 states. Known for its creative tacos and popular queso, Torchy’s is constantly innovating.

Recent menu changes include the addition of new items like the Damn Good Tots, topped with queso and bacon. The chain continues to expand its footprint and attract new fans.

7. Velvet Taco: Unique Tacos and Future Growth

Velvet Taco, which started in Dallas in 2011, has expanded to nearly 50 locations across seven states. The chain is celebrated for its unique taco creations, such as the Chicken & Waffle taco and Tikka Chicken taco. Future expansion plans include opening locations in airports, further increasing its reach.

Other Chains To Watch

Outside of Texas, several other Mexican chains are also expanding:

  • Bubbakoo’s Burritos: A popular Mexican spot from the Jersey Shore.
  • BurritoBar: A Canadian chain looking to enter the U.S. market.
  • Condado Tacos: Originating in Columbus, Ohio, near The Ohio State University.
  • District Taco: A small chain growing in the mid-Atlantic region.
  • Surchero’s: Founded in Douglas, Georgia, in 2007.

As these chains spread their flavors across the U.S., it will be interesting to see if any venture into Texas, the epicenter of Mexican food innovation.
